POYNETTE, Wis. (WMTV) – For 150 years, stones have slid across the ice in this small Wisconsin town, as the Poynette Curling Club celebrates a major milestone, making it one of the oldest curling clubs in the nation.
The tradition started with Scottish immigrants who settled in Columbia County in the 1840s and brought their beloved sport with them.
“In about the 1840s, there was a lot of trouble in Scotland. And when they got here, they brought their game of curling,” said Terry Thompson, a member of the Poynette Area Historical Society who researched the club’s history.
