Landmark status sought to block Gilman Street building’s demolition

A push to turn one of Madison’s more unique downtown buildings into a historic landmark could complicate a proposed student housing development.

Georgia developer Landmark Properties is proposing to demolish Master Hall — a 7-story concrete apartment building that resembles stacked up building blocks — along with several other properties on the 400 block of West Gilman Street to make way for a 16-story student apartment complex.

Landmark’s October proposal notes the new building would include retail space, 72 vehicle parking spaces and around 260 apartments sized from efficiencies to 5-bedroom units…
