Madison Parks removes century-old marker from Indigenous burial mound

This winter, workers with Madison Parks joined a statewide effort to further protect the sanctity of Indigenous burial mounds as they used an excavator to remove a more than century-old grave marker from the frozen ground near Lake Wingra and Edgewood University.

Placed in 1915, the marker was the last to be removed from directly on top of a mound in a Madison city park, said Chad Hughes, the parks department operations manager.

Parks staff members worked in conjunction with the Ho-Chunk Nation and Wisconsin Historical Society to remove the marker amid a larger push to remove similar markers from burial mounds across the state…
