Madison Independent Police Monitor report alleges racial disparities in enforcement

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Madison’s Office of the Independent Police Monitor released its annual report, alleging major racial disparities in police enforcement.

The office received 25 complaints this year. Eight cases were closed, and three remain open investigations.

“When I came on board, we had a backlog of 18 cases,” Interim Independent Police Monitor Aeiramique Glass said. “None had ever been closed out in the history of the office. In late January, we closed our first case.”

Arrest and citation disparities

According to the 75-page document, Black people in Madison are arrested at 3 to more than 12 times the rate of white people in every district.

“Are there racial disparities in policing outcomes in Madison? Are they among the most extreme in the nation? Those are the hard questions, those are the real questions,” Glass said…
