Madison rezoning proposal aims to speed up home project permits

Homeowners across Madison would see their properties rezoned under a proposal to speed up the approval process for some alterations to houses and allow city planning staff to focus more attention on larger projects.

The change would affect around 4,000 single-family and two-family homes in areas currently zoned for “planned development” across 16 City Council districts, according to city zoning administrator Katie Bannon.

The reasoning behind the proposal is twofold, Bannon said. For one, it is designed to make city rules clearer and more accessible, as well as make it easier for property owners to carry out home projects and additions. For example, people who own the same type of property in a council district where a deck addition or new egress window is allowed “by right” currently have a much quicker approval process than those in planned development districts…
