April 12, 1861 – The Civil War begins

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – On this day, April 12, 1861, the Civil War began when the Confederates opened fire on Fort Sumter, South Carolina.

The fort, held by the Union, was surrendered a day later after over 4,000 rounds were launched at it by Confederates.

The Civil War became the deadliest war in American history, lasting four years and taking the lives of an estimated 620,000 soldiers…
