Atlanta Black Pride’s 20th-anniversary weekend put HIV prevention and community health alongside concerts, nightlife and cultural programming. The events offered a timely reminder of the role that celebrations can play in connecting people with information, while also underscoring a harder question: what access remains after the weekend ends?
The program included the Pure Heat Community Festival at Piedmont Park, Pride + PrEP at V12 Restaurant & Sports Bar and a reception at Atlanta City Hall, according to Atlanta Daily World. The festival was the weekend’s main free public gathering, combining entertainment with health and wellness resources, according to Rough Draft Atlanta. The reports describe HIV education, prevention and PrEP information; they do not provide a count of people tested, prescriptions started or referrals completed.
A large regional need
The health focus comes in a metro area with a substantial HIV burden. Morehouse School of Medicine reported that 40,931 people were known to be living with HIV in metro Atlanta in 2021, a rate of 662.5 per 100,000 people, according to its summary of regional data: Morehouse School of Medicine. That figure describes people known to be living with HIV, not the number of people reached by Black Pride programming or the results of this year’s events.
Access is also shaped by where services are located and how easily people can reach them. An Emory COMPASS Coordinating Center and AIDSVu mapping report said that adding HIV resources in underserved areas and improving transportation could reduce travel barriers in Atlanta and Houston: Emory COMPASS Coordinating Center and AIDSVu. The report points to a limitation of one-time outreach: information at a festival cannot by itself resolve gaps in transportation, service availability or continued treatment.
Services beyond Pride weekend
Fulton County lists year-round HIV prevention services through the Fulton County Board of Health, including testing and a PrEP clinic, according to Fulton County.
