Cobb Off the Hook for More Than $7M in Barrett Reliever Costs

Cobb County’s contribution to the construction of the South Barrett Reliever, which is aimed at reducing traffic congestion at Interstate 75 and Barrett Parkway, is dropping significantly thanks to increased funding from the state.

This week, the Cobb Board of Commissioners approved a revised agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation for the third phase of the project, which includes construction of a 450-foot-long bridge over I-75.

While the county was initially expected to cover more than $11 million of the estimated $38 million project, Georgia DOT plans to contribute another $7.4 million in construction costs.

That brings the state’s contributions to roughly $32 million, meaning the county will now pay about $5.6 million for construction of the project’s third phase and water system costs associated with the project.

That’s a significant drop from the more than $11 million construction bill the county was looking at prior to this week’s commission meeting.

The Town Center Community Improvement District has been leading the charge on the South Barrett Reliever, a project more than a decade in the making that aims to cut traffic on Barrett Parkway by about 20%.
