Investigation underway in stabbing and officer involved shooting in Atlanta

According to a statement from the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, an investigation is currently underway after an officer shot a person observed stabbing two individuals in Atlanta.

GBI officials stated that on January 24, the MARTA Police Department requested their assistance in the investigation, which also left the officer injured.

According to officials, preliminary information indicates that on January 24, MARTA P.D. officers responded to a stabbing incident outside the Five Points MARTA Station after an officer observed a man stabbing two people with a knife. The GBI reports that the officer fired his gun and hit the man, now identified as 33-year-old George Birkey Jr. of Wisconsin. Birkey Jr., the two victims, and the officer, who sustained injuries to his head and hands, were all taken to Grady Hospital in critical condition.

At this time, officials state that an investigation is underway, and once complete, the case file will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
