A Douglasville man has been indicted on vehicular homicide charges in relation to a 2023 crash that killed a newborn baby.
Police say Zachary Scott Williams was under the influence of alcohol when he lost control of his vehicle and caused the fatal wreck around 11:15 p.m. on Dec. 30, 2023.
According to police, Williams was driving 67 mph in a 35 mph zone on Humphries Hill Road in Austell when he crossed into the opposite lane and collided with a Toyota 4Runner.
Two people were injured inside the 4Runner, including Eunice Gyasi, who was nine months pregnant at the time.
Police say Gyasi was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where she gave birth to a baby girl, Evangela Gyasi, approximately two hours after the crash. Evangela Gyasi only survived 28 minutes before she died as a result of the injuries her mother sustained in the collision, according to Williams’ arrest warrant.
Williams was being treated for minor injuries at the scene when he told officials he had been drinking alcohol prior to the collision. Police obtained his records from Grady Memorial Hospital that show three hours after the wreck, Williams’ blood alcohol content of 0.156, nearly double the legal limit.
