Cobb Jury Awards $2 Billion in Damages in Roundup Cancer Suit

A Cobb County jury ordered agrochemical giant Bayer to pay more than $2 billion in damages to a man who says a weed killer produced by the company gave him cancer.

According to former Gov. Roy Barnes, who served as local counsel for the plaintiff’s legal team, the jury reached the verdict in Cobb County State Court Judge Jane Manning’s courtroom Friday. The ruling awarded $65 million in compensatory damages and $2 billion in punitive damages to plaintiff John Barnes, who has no relation to the former governor.

It’s the largest single-plaintiff injury verdict in the Peach State’s history, according to the lead law firm representing the plaintiff, Arnold & Itkin, and a “landmark victory” in the continued fight against Monsanto, the company that began producing the herbicide Roundup that was bought by Bayer in 2018…
