Kennesaw Council Clashes Over Cannabis Decriminalization

The Kennesaw City Council may look to eliminate jail time for misdemeanor cannabis possession — a plan Mayor Derek Easterling said he’ll try to veto, if approved.

The idea was proposed by Councilman Anthony Gutierrez during the council’s Tuesday work session, sparking a nearly hour-long debate over how someone charged with simple misdemeanor cannabis possession should be punished in the city of Kennesaw.

State law allows anyone charged with misdemeanor possession, those caught holding less than one ounce of the drug, to be punished with up to one year in jail and up to $1,000 in fines…
