At a recent Kennesaw City Council meeting, members discussed reducing the punishments for cannabis possession to possible community service and a less than $40 fine.
The cannabis decriminalization discussion was prompted by Councilmember Anthony Gutierrez, who said Georgia as a state was behind the times when it comes to legalization, and Kennesaw should take steps to modernize its approach to how it handles cannabis in the city.
If the council ends up drafting legislation to do so, and passing it, the decriminalization effort would reduce fines from up to $1,000 and a one-year sentence to just $35 and/or community service, if someone is found with less than an ounce of cannabis…
