Atlanta man arrested near north Georgia state prison after deputies intercept suspected drug drop

CHATTOOGA COUNTY, Ga. — A 22-year-old Atlanta man was taken into custody Saturday night after deputies say he was caught attempting to smuggle contraband into Hays State Prison in Chattooga County.

According to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were alerted around 7:30 p.m. to a suspicious man carrying a duffle bag who had entered the woods off Underwood Drive near the prison. Deputies, along with Trion police officers and Hays State Prison staff, quickly set up a perimeter around the area.
