HYATTSVILLE, Md. (DC News Now) — Officials have released the name of a man who died after being shot by an officer in Montgomery County last week.
On Monday, the Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General said 11-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD), Lt. Charles Cooper, was involved in the shooting that killed 32-year-old James Lewis, Jr. of Sandy Springs, Ga.

The deadly incident happened on March 26 during a traffic stop along 23rd Ave. Probable cause was found to search Lewis’ car, and while Cooper was doing that, Lewis was standing outside the car with another officer.
