A familiar fight returns to a controversial Cobb corner

A controversial request to build a gas station at the former site of the historic Robert McAfee house is set to return before the Cobb County Planning Commission next week.

RaceTrac, headquartered in Cobb, is seeking to redevelop the two-acre property at 2595 Bells Ferry Road, near the intersection of Barrett Parkway and across from Bells Ferry Elementary School, to build a 6,100-square-foot convenience store and fueling station.

Following an outpouring of opposition from local residents, students and the Cobb County School District in September, the Planning Commission unanimously voted to delay its decision on the proposal. The following month the commission recommended approval of rezoning the site, though excluded a variety of permitted businesses, including fuel, alcohol, vaping and tobacco sales, as well as car washes and drive-throughs…
