Black History Month is being observed with an emphasis on educating people about the important contributions of Black Americans. This week, RISD’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Department partnered with the Richardson Area Alliance of Black School Educators for a discussion. The discussion, titled ‘A Conversation with TaShara Parker’, was led by the Emmy-winning journalist.

The focus of the discussion was hair discrimination in schools and workplaces. The aim was to increase understanding among students, staff, and community members about the unique relationship some students have with their hair.

Angie Lee, RISD Executive Director, stressed the need to avoid obstructing student academic progress with penalties related to a child’s hair. This event was part of a larger initiative to recognize and honor the legacy of Black Americans in educational settings.

Black History Month is a time to recognize and value the rich history and contributions of Black Americans. Events like these promote understanding and inclusivity.
