Garland offers debris turned into mulch, compost for free after cleaning up recent damage

The City of Garland sanitation and wood-chipper crews have finally cleared the unprecedented tree damage from last May’s high winds.

Just nine weeks after hurricane-force winds hit Garland, the crews cleared up more than 32 tons of debris, which are now wood chips, soon to be compost and mulch at the Hinton Regional Landfill.

Now, the city says they give the compost and mulch to residents for free.

City landfill director Chris Hoofnagle says residents can fill a bag, or a truck, with free compost or mulch on a self-serve basis.

Garland Landfill Director Chris Hoofnagle says storms last spring caused about three times the damage normal for a single year. Which is enough to fill a Home Depot store with wood chips.
