Rockwall, TX (May 13, 2025) – Grace Clinic, a Rockwall County nonprofit organization, is growing opportunities for better health thanks to the generous support of The Home Depot Foundation. In addition to medical care, cancer screenings, mental health resources and chronic disease support, Grace Clinic has added something new to its mission: a Community Garden. This hands-on project is designed to offer local families access to fresh produce, gardening instruction and the opportunity to actively participate in their food-growing process.
Many of Grace Clinic’s patients are among the 25% of Rockwall County residents who face food insecurity. On top of that, many are managing chronic conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease – issues often tied to poor nutrition. With fresh, healthy food often priced out of reach and ultra-processed options more affordable and convenient, families find themselves stuck in a cycle that’s hard to break.
The team at Grace Clinic felt compelled to find a solution that went beyond medical care and medications. A solution that could equip families with the tools to take control of their health. To test their idea, they partnered with CLife Church in the Spring of 2024 and created a small pilot garden behind the clinic. In one raised bed, they grew tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, okra and herbs. Although the harvest was small, the response from patients was overwhelming and reinforced the team’s belief that they could – and should – do more.
Grace Clinic then reached out to The Home Depot for possible assistance with the next phase of their project. Marissa Hernando, Assistant Store Manager at the Rockwall Home Depot and an avid gardener, immediately saw the vision. She visited the clinic, sketched out garden plans, and contacted Christopher Rangel, Team Depot District Captain, to rally additional support and funding. Together, they organized a team of more than 15 Associates representing Home Depot stores from seven cities in our area…
