The city of Allen will receive $4.6 million in federal grants allocated by the state of Texas to improve traffic safety at key intersections, officials announced Thursday, June 19.
The funding comes from the Highway Safety Improvement Program, a federally funded initiative administered by the Texas Department of Transportation. The grants will pay for upgraded traffic signals, new turn lanes, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks and advanced detection systems at several intersections across the city.
“This grant money allows us to make smart safety upgrades without using more local tax dollars,” said Pete Phillis, Allen’s chief financial officer. “In a typical year, we bring in close to $2 million in grants like this — it makes a real difference.”…
