McKinney passes 2 ordinances targeting public camping, sitting and sleeping

MCKINNEY, Texas — The City of McKinney has officially passed two controversial ordinances aimed at addressing homelessness in public spaces. One ordinance makes it unlawful to sleep, lie, or sit on a public sidewalk, street, or median. The other prohibits camping in any publicly accessible space. The city stresses there are exceptions to both ordinances.

For William, who has spent the past year living outside near the public library, the changes are personal.

“We have all the resources very close to us,” he said, crocheting small pumpkins to make a bit of money. “A lot of these people lack community; they don’t have any family or friends. That’s why I am here.”…
