Everything was nearly lost by a drift that grew into a violent current—the slow unraveling that happens when it’s assumed that performance is determined by presence and dedication. Home turns into a layover between shifts, waiting for the next opportunity just around the corner to make our mark.
It didn’t start that way, though. Most of us think sacrifice is the currency of success in the fire service. When there are very few forms of payment available, the answer becomes our time. Eventually, this proves costly.
First Successes
We’re in the fire academy. The amount of knowledge coming at us becomes overwhelming. At times, it may feel like we’re drowning. The pressure to succeed is intense. We must contend with the expectations of our cadre, our peers, our sponsoring department (hopefully), and ourselves.
Then comes graduation night. Congratulations, let’s check that box!…
