Wylie ISD Bus Driver Honored Nationally for Rescuing Local Student

Julio Ospina, a special education bus driver for Wylie ISD, has been named the 2025 National Special Needs Driver of the Year by AMF Bruns America. He received the award on December 4, 2025, at the Wylie ISD Transportation Center. Colleagues, district leaders, and his family attended the event. Ospina also received a $1,000 check for his service and commitment to student safety.

The award recognizes transportation professionals who provide exceptional service to students with special needs. Ospina was selected for his actions during the previous school year. After finishing his afternoon route, he saw a young child walking alone along the road, wearing a harness. Ospina stopped to check on the child, following his training.

He contacted authorities and learned the child had been reported missing from a nearby school district. Ospina stayed with the child until police arrived. His actions helped ensure the child’s safety and return to family…
