Floating lanterns likely cause for fire that destroyed 2 Mesquite homes

MESQUITE, Texas — Two homes were destroyed in a fire Thursday night that investigators say was likely caused by floating lanterns released miles away.

Around 8 p.m. on March 5, the Mesquite Fire Department responded to reports of a residential structure fire near Peachtree Road and Bruton Road. When firefighters arrived, they found two homes engulfed in flames. Crews worked quickly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.

No injuries were reported, but both homes were destroyed. Elizabeth Ruiz, who lived in one of the homes, says everything happened in a matter of minutes…
