Rooted In Kindness: Allen Man Gives Away Thousands Of Plants In His Front Yard

Cars slow along Rocky CreekLane in Allen, some pulling briefly to the curb, others circling back after spotting a folding table covered in small potted plants. There’s no cashier, no large signage advertising a business and no one asking for payment. Instead, there are rows of greenery and a handwritten invitation to take one home.

This is the Plant Table of Allen, a front-yard giveaway run by 81-year-old Walter Merrill, a retired engineer who has turned an overabundance of houseplants into a beloved neighborhood stop built on generosity, curiosity and a little bit of propagation science.

A Lot Of Love (And Plants) To Go Around

The idea began simply enough. In the summer of 2023, Walter found himself overwhelmed by spider plants multiplying faster than he could keep up. With three large plants producing offshoots at a rapid pace, he began giving the extras away at Texas Health Hospital Allen, where he volunteers.

“I wanted to find people to take the spider plants rather than throwing them away,” Walter told Local Profile. “I soon saturated the ER staff with spider plants and began bringing other plants,” he said…
