MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A driver escaped injury Friday night after a tree collapsed onto her SUV in the Frayser neighborhood, according to the Memphis Police Department.
Police said officers responded to a crash near Burnham Avenue and Denver Street around 10:30 p.m.

The driver told officers she was traveling westbound on Burnham Avenue when a tree in front of a home in the 2000 block of Burnham Avenue suddenly fell onto her vehicle.
According to the report, the tree landed on a Hyundai Santa Fe, causing disabling damage. The SUV was towed from the scene.
No injuries were reported.

The incident comes after a week of wet weather across the Memphis area. Rainfall totals ranged from about 1.5 to 3 inches across much of the city, with some localized areas receiving more than 4 inches from repeated rounds of heavy showers and thunderstorms.

While the exact cause of the tree’s collapse has not been determined, prolonged periods of rainfall can saturate soil and weaken tree root systems, increasing the risk of trees falling during storms or even in otherwise calm conditions…
