‘We have to right the ship’: MSCS oversight board holds first meeting in Nashville

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Gov. Bill Lee opened the first meeting of the state’s oversight board for Memphis-Shelby County Schools, which met in Nashville on Thursday.

He acknowledged the controversy surrounding the creation of the board, part of a state intervention in the local school district, but said he believed it was essential to help children in Memphis succeed.

“Memphis is a globally important city that matters significantly, in one of the most important ways, for Tennessee,” Lee said. “We all are committed to these children. This is a moment in time. It is not the answer. It is a step forward.”
