Appeals board reverses benefits award in back injury claim

The Tennessee Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board on Thursday reversed an order awarding additional medical and temporary disability benefits to a hospital worker who alleged he injured his back and leg after missing a step on a ladder.

In Mtiri v. Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Memphis, the board upheld a finding that the employer had actual notice of the reported accident but ruled that the worker had not shown he was likely to prevail on medical causation.

Lofti Mtiri said he missed the bottom step of a ladder while changing a ceiling tile in December 2024 and struck a desk, injuring his low back and left leg. Encompass initially accepted the claim and paid medical and temporary disability benefits before denying it based on notice and causation…
