MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) — A $22 million mixed-use development is planned for the site of the former Houston’s Restaurant at 5000 Poplar Avenue in East Memphis, according to a commercial new construction permit filed with the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development. The permit is the latest update to the project, which will replace the beloved East Memphis restaurant that closed suddenly in December 2024.
What’s Being Built
Back in February, developers laid out their plans for the development, saying the project would involve a two-story, approximately 50,000-square-foot building (25,000 square feet of office space and 25,000 square feet of retail space). The development will also include a 6,300-square-foot, 170-seat restaurant called “The Tradition.”
The August 4 permit filing details a total building area of 87,714 square feet across three stories, standing 52 feet tall. Plans also include a basement parking garage and surface parking.
