A Frayser homeowner returned to his house on the 4000 block of Overton Crossing Street to find the front door standing open and two of his micro pit bull puppies gone. The puppies, valued at $4,500 each, were stolen sometime after the man left home on the evening of August 28, according to Memphis police.
The homeowner had left earlier that evening and came back to discover the break-in, as reported by Action News 5. Memphis Police Department records add further detail, noting officers responded to the burglary call at 8:45 p.m. that night, after the homeowner had been away from roughly 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., according to the Memphis Police Department. The department says it is now searching for the two puppies stolen from their owner, and anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 901-528-CASH.
A Combined $9,000 Haul Could Mean Felony Charges
With the two puppies together valued at $9,000, whoever is responsible could face serious legal exposure if identified. Tennessee law classifies theft of property worth between $2,500 and $10,000 as a Class D felony, carrying two to 12 years in prison and fines up to $5,000, according to Justia Law. Tennessee prosecutors are also permitted to aggregate the value of multiple stolen items into a single count, which is how the two puppies’ combined price tag could push charges to that felony tier rather than treating each animal as a separate, lower-value theft, per the Tennessee Bar Association.
It remains unclear whether the homeowner was specifically targeted by someone who knew the puppies were inside and how much they were worth, or whether security or video footage captured the break-in. Whether the puppies were microchipped, which could help identify them if they turn up elsewhere, is also unknown.
Part of a Pattern of High-Value Puppy Thefts
This is not the first time Memphis has seen thieves target valuable puppies this year.
