The railway enters Tennessee through a different door from the state’s mountain-road itineraries. On the City of New Orleans, the Tennessee story belongs to the west: Memphis, its historic Central Station, and the smaller Newbern-Dyersburg stop farther north. It is a useful route for a Memphis visit or a longer journey between the Midwest and the Gulf South.
The first planning decision is to accept the train’s actual geography and timing. This is not an east–west tour linking Nashville, Chattanooga, and the Smokies. Much of the Tennessee passage is at night or very early in the morning. Build the journey around a place you want to visit, and the train can provide a memorable arrival rather than a misleading promise of statewide sightseeing.

Amtrak’s City of New Orleans connects Chicago, Memphis, and New Orleans. In Tennessee, the train calls at Memphis and Newbern-Dyersburg. Those two stations offer very different starting points for a visit, so choose between them according to your destination on the ground rather than treating them as interchangeable stops.
Memphis is the clearer choice for a city break centered on its museums, music, and downtown neighborhoods. Newbern-Dyersburg is more relevant when you have a specific reason to visit that part of West Tennessee and a plan for the final miles.
