DeSoto County org provides families with health care, educational assistance

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Every Tuesday as part of our Greater Memphis on a Mission series, we highlight organizations making Memphis better. This week, we caught up with a group that believes in offering hope again.

Jenna Kern is the director of DeSoto County Dream Center. It is a nonprofit organization helping low-income and underserved residents in North Mississippi. Through teacher referrals, they serve third through fifth graders who need a little extra help.

“We focus on Title 1 students and their families. We do that by providing food, clothing, health care and educational assistance,” said Kern.

Their leadership program serves middle and high schoolers. “It focuses more on character development, college skills, test skills and job skills,” Kern added.

They noticed many of their neighbors in Desoto County work but don’t have insurance. So in 2020, they added Trinity Health Center. It’s a full healthcare facility for the working uninsured.
