Free dental clinic to serve thousands in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The smiles of thousands of underserved and uninsured Memphians will be forever changed this weekend.

The Mid-South Mission of Mercy ‘s free dental clinic will open its doors Friday at 6 a.m. at Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova. Inside Bellevue Baptist Church Thursday, volunteers arrived early to set up.

“You’re looking at, first of all, the beginnings of the largest public dental clinic in the world right here in Memphis, Tennessee,” Dr. Mitchel Godat of Mid-South Mission of Mercy said.

“They may have had substance abuse. They may have had trauma. They may have plain neglect and possibly not planned to see a dentist in the years,” Dr. Stuart Hudsmith said. “So, these people, you know the smile is a very strong indicator of the burden in one’s life.”

“It’s heartwarming for dentists. All of my friends will be out here treating patients. They’re all out here because they have a giving heart and skilled hands,” Hudsmith said.
