Memphis airport warns drivers about potholes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Many Memphians are expressing their concerns about the potholes in the area and now Memphis International Airport is concerned as well.

Wednesday, the airport put a warning up on Facebook for those who may be driving to the airport to use caution due to the potholes on Plough Boulevard, Jim McGehee Parkway, and Winchester Boulevard.

WREG checked and found that some of the potholes have been repaired but not all of them.

The City of Memphis sent WREG a statement Thursday, saying in part, “The city’s street maintenance crews are using all available resources to repair potholes that have formed during the recent winter storm.”

The City of Memphis says that more than 2,164 potholes were repaired from January 1-23.

It’s not just city roads that are suffering after the recent round of winter weather. TDOT says freeways are seeing more potholes as well.

“Our plow, unfortunately, causes pavement issues when they plow the snow off the roads because they are literally scrubbing the highways,” said Nichole Lawrence, communications officer with TDOT. “When we have frozen precipitation, and then it thaws, and then it freezes, and then it thaws, and then we have rain. All that seeks down into the pavement and it cracks and that’s how potholes have been formed.”
