Group helps young boy in wheelchair get a service dog

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A young boy confined to a wheelchair now has a chance to greatly enhance his life.

Third-grader Reed Scruggs maneuvers the halls of Center Hill Elementary in Olive Branch like a champ, but having a service dog would allow him to do so much more.

“The service dog itself is costing $7,000, and then they will go to Kansas for a week, and I believe it’s during spring break, and they will be there, and so you think of a family for a hotel, for a week food for a week,” said Tina Milligan.

Insurance won’t cover any of the costs, so Tina and other friends and family launched a GoFundMe and held bake sales and t-shirt drives to raise money. They also contacted WREG for help.

We headed inside the school where Reed’s mother also teaches to deliver the surprise — $1,000 from News Channel 3 and our anonymous donor.
