MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is now in custody after being accused of tricking a woman into investing $30,000 into his nonexistent business over a year ago.
Man faces 200 years in federal prison for string of armed robberies
Bobby Ellis, 40, is charged with Theft of Property $10,000-$60,000 and domestic assault-bodily harm from another case.
On September 8, 2022, the victim filed a police report stating she was deceived by Ellis earlier that year in April.
She reportedly signed a contract and made a $30,000 investment into his cigar bar business, “The Living Room”, which he was starting in South Memphis on Brooks Road.
Her initial investment was supposed to be returned within 120 days of signing.
After the victim deposited the $30,000 into Ellis’ bank account, he stopped communicating with her and did not return the initial investment they agreed upon.

According to Memphis Police, Ellis never leased the space on Brooks Road and there was never a business named “The Living Room” at the address he gave her.
