MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The owner of a popular Midtown boutique says she is forced to close the store after an employee was caught on camera stealing thousands of dollars in merchandise.
Jennifer Burris, the owner of The Ivory Closet in Overton Square, says the “inside job” cost her her business.
Former employee Elizabeth Ault, 20, was sentenced with less than a year of probation, and she has to pay back more than $2,000 to Burris.
Authorities say Ault was caught on camera stealing more than $2,300 in merchandise.
Surveillance video from the store showed an employee ringing up items, but Burris says payment for the items was nonexistent. That’s how she knew Ault was stealing.
Burris said large quantities of merchandise were going missing, “like, entire displays.”
Burris says over a years’ time, Ault ran off with much more.
“Our inventory is incredibly off, our online store Is damaged, our accounting is messed up,” she said.
