Church members step in to help woman after house fire

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A close-knit church family is standing in to help after a woman’s house caught on fire in Whitehaven.

Curlean Tate and Lillie Sanders reached out to WREG to help Shirley Gillespie, a fellow church member, when her house caught fire in late January. She’s been living in a hotel ever since and the cost is adding up.

“You still have your household expenses. You have to pay the expenses for living in a hotel and eating out and all of that. So, we think this will really help and give her peace of mind that it’s going to be okay,” Curlean said.

They loaded up the car and got ready to deliver $1,000 from News Channel 3 and our anonymous donor to help Shirley through this tough time.

“We know that News Channel 3 helps everybody. That’s the reason that Sister Tate called her, so we could help you try to stay until the insurance does something,” Lillie said.

Thanks to her House of Prayer Church family, Shirley has some extra money to help her out while she is waiting for her insurance company to repair all the damage.
