Bee 901 Co. sells honey, gives 100% of proceeds to nursing home

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Every Tuesday, as part of our Greater Memphis on a Mission series, we highlight organizations making Memphis better. This week, we caught up with a group that believes in a bee mentality.

Kevin Woods is the President and Beekeeper of Bee 901 Co, a nonprofit organization that takes care of bees and their hives.

“Bees are doing what we want to do for Memphis. Bees work for the greater good of the hive. They think the success of the hive depends on them,” Wood said.

Woods explained how the organization came to be. “A high school friend of mine, Nathan Bland, sent me a text one Saturday morning out of the blue. He said, ‘Hey, somebody in my family passed away and gave me a couple thousand dollars. What if we started a nonprofit?’”

They bottle the honey that the bees produce and sell it; 100% of their proceeds go to creating better lives for Memphis.

With zero background in beekeeping, they researched all things bee-related on the internet, attended monthly meetings with the Memphis Area Beekeepers Association, and linked up with the Bartlett Bee Whisperer.
