‘Lord, thank you’: Honor student on life support after hit-and-run wakes up

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Mitchell High honor student put on life support after a hit-and-run crash three weeks ago has been taken off his ventilator and is on the road to recovery, his family says.

Sharon Jones said her grandson Thomas Powell woke up Thursday morning and is talking.

“This morning when I went up to see him, he turned around, and I said, ‘Oh my God, your eyes are open,’ and he said, ‘Yeah, Grandma, I’ve been missing you.’ I said ‘Baby, I’ve been here every single day since you’ve been here,’” said Jones. “I was like, oh my God, Lord, thank you.”
