Mom accused of stabbing child with screwdriver after picking him up from school

MEMPHIS, Tenn. β€” A mother is facing a charge of aggravated child abuse and neglect after police say she tried to push her son out of a moving car and stabbed him with a screwdriver Tuesday afternoon.

Miriam Castillo, 44, is also charged with domestic assault and is being held in the Shelby County Jail on a $40,000 bond.

The victim told police his mother was driving recklessly after she picked him up from Hickory Ridge Middle School and tried to push him out of the vehicle. Police said Castillo was on her way to pick up her daughter from Newberry Elementary when it happened.

The child said he called his father, who told him to take the keys out of the ignition when the car came to a stop. The boy said he tried to grab the keys, but his mother bit him on his hand and arm and stabbed him in the leg with a screwdriver, police said.

According to witnesses, Castillo got out of her car on Newberry Avenue and began chasing her son around her vehicle. One woman said the boy was yelling, β€œShe is trying to kill me,” and she jumped in to help him.
