Whitehaven student found with Glock at school after posting pic with rifle

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis Shelby County School student was arrested after being caught with a gun in his car on the school’s property Friday, police say.

Prior to the arrest, officers say they were called to Whitehaven High School on Elvis Presley Boulevard around 10 a.m. due to the juvenile posting a photo on social media holding a gun with the caption, “by myself.”

The school security guard told police they detained the student and asked him if he had a gun in his vehicle. The student said no, but the guard searched his Dodge Charger anyway and found a black Glock firearm in the backseat.

When officers checked the gun in MPD’s database, it was reported stolen on September 20 out of Mount Moriah.

The student told the security guard that he was holding an assault rifle in the photo he posted on social media and that it was in a tote bag back home.

When the student’s mom arrived, she signed a consent to search form.

Officers say they checked the student’s room but did not find the assault rifle. The student then attempted to show the officers where the gun was but also could not locate it. He claims he last saw it the day before and he doesn’t know who took it or moved it.
