Volunteers share Christmas love with people on Memphis streets

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — While many are celebrating Christmas Day with loved ones, opening presents and enjoying a holiday meal, many who call the street their home are not so fortunate.

But for some, the spirit of giving is reaching people down on their luck in Memphis this Christmas.

The Christmas spirit echoed through downtown Memphis Wednesday morning as members of the homeless community felt the love from Wanda McClure and her volunteers, who set up on Poplar near Danny Thomas Boulevard.

McClure has been providing for the homeless at Christmas for some 20 years and says there is a growing number of people living on the street for a variety of reasons.

“I’m currently homeless because I got in some trouble, been incarcerated. I got nowhere to go,” Sammy Grant said.

Regardless the reason, what was handed out on a cloudy Christmas morning came from the heart.

“It’s exciting just to see them have Christmas,” volunteer Glenda Howze said. “It’s exciting to me. Knowing that we can get out here and help somebody.”
