MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County, home to Memphis and Tennessee’s largest county, experienced the largest population decline among U.S. counties between 2023 and 2024, the U.S. Census Bureau says.
The county’s population declined by 3,379 residents between July 1, 2023, and July 1, 2025. It now stands at an estimated 910,530 this year — a decline from 930,015 in 2020.
