Some TN driver service centers adding Saturday appointments to help people get REAL IDs ahead of deadline

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee is adding Saturday appointments for people to get new REAL IDs ahead of the upcoming deadline on May 7.

Starting that day, state-level ID cards like driver’s licenses will not be acceptable for federal purposes such as getting through airport security. IDs will need to be compliant with federal rules to be accepted. United States Congress required the new rules in 2005 but delayed the day they would take effect several times.

To get REAL IDs and be compliant with the law, most people in Tennessee need to visit a driver service center and submit documents that establish identity, date of birth as well as proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence or other lawful U.S. status…
