State grants to fund affordable housing for those with mental illness, overcoming addiction

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Groups across Tennessee will be receiving state funding to create more affordable housing for those experiencing mental illness, recovering from addiction or transitioning from incarceration.

It’s part of the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services’ Creating Homes Initiative, a program in its 25th year. In total, $5.2 million is set to be dolled out to groups across several Tennessee counties, including Knox.

“We are so excited to offer this latest round of grants through the Creating Homes Initiative,” TDMHSAS Commissioner Marie Williams said. “For 25 years now, CHI has created safe, quality, affordable housing for some of Tennessee’s most vulnerable residents. It’s no surprise that shelter is an essential part of a person’s journey of mental wellness and recovery, and CHI has met that need and supported tens of thousands of people to live the lives they always dreamed of.”…
