Southaven to host fall hummingbird festival

Southaven will be adding a new festival this fall to celebrate the migration of hummingbirds, which city officials believe will be a boon to tourism.

The Board of Aldermen unanimously approved an idea by Alderman John David Wheeler to add flowers to the wooded area near the Field of Dreams playground complex at Snowden Grove Park in order to attract the ruby-throated hummingbird as they migrate south to Mexico and South America for the winter.

Wheeler said his mother used to attend the Hummingbird Migration and Nature Celebration that was held for over 20 years at Strawberry Plains Audubon Center in Holly Springs. The event drew thousands of visitors each year but was discontinued in 2023.

“My mom, who has passed away, she loved hummingbirds,” Wheeler said. “My wife and her used to go to that festival in Holly Springs. And I have feeders in my yard. I mean, who doesn’t love hummingbirds?”…
