33,000 families apply for Tennessee’s school voucher program, prompting concerns from Memphis-Shelby County Schools

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — More than 33,000 Tennessee families have applied for the Tennessee Education Freedom Scholarship program, better known as the school voucher program, since its launch Thursday, May 15.

The expanded school choice has been celebrated by some private schools while Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) leaders have sounded the alarm over the potential impact on public education.

Tito Langston, MSCS Assistant Superintendent of Operations, said MSCS expects to lose around 2,500 students to the program next school year. He said the shift could cost MSCS a portion of its nearly $2 billion annual budget…
