Lethal highway gun violence as holiday travel week starts

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Fourth of July holiday travel week is off to a deadly start in Memphis. A woman was killed and a man critically injured following yet another interstate highway shooting. AAA reported the long holiday travel week officially started Sunday, but the pavement of an interstate in Memphis was bathed in the blue lights of a police response when the clock hit midnight Saturday.

Police responded to the westbound lanes of I-240 near the exit ramp for eastbound 385. MPD doesn’t share much information about the incident, but they said one woman was dead at the scene and a male was transported to the hospital with critical injuries.

Tennessee Department highway cameras showed Memphis police officers at the scene of the latest gun violence on the highways in the Bluff City. Police arrived just before 11:30 PM Saturday night, responding to the shooting reported at I-240 W. and Highway 385 E. A statement from MPD shared few details, but it did confirm one female was pronounced dead at the scene and one male was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
