Fire department veteran remembered as ‘true public servant’

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Across the city Monday, there was an outpouring of love for Gary White, a 27-year veteran of the Memphis Fire Department who in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 240.

“Devastated,” is how Memphis firefighter Eric Jones described the feeling. “It was really hard to start my shift this morning when I heard the news.”

Jones said White was the best colleague you could have asked for.

“He was willing to teach as well as learn from others,” Jones said. “He was great at getting his point across, telling people what they needed to know, how they needed to do it, and he also had a listening ear. He never said no, he was always there for you.”…
